Q.The buzzword right now is gentrification, have you witnessed it and what are your thoughts on it (positive/negative/neutral)?
N: I think in general it’s a negative thing, however in some ways there are benefits to gentrification. From what I’ve witnessed, often areas that the council don’t really care about can be transformed by small businesses, they can make what before were run down high streets into beautiful, colourful places. However when large, corporate companies begin to take over the area, Local businesses suffer and people get pushed out from where they live as prices rise as a result.
T: I feel gentrification has its pluses and minuses. I lived in Deptford until I was 13 (which is just down the road from me) and I feel like that area has been up and coming for ages. There’s always been a small art scene and stuff; some amazing cafes and bars have opened recently which I love - I just hope the rent doesn’t sky rocket like it has in Dalston!
K: In terms of gentrification I think it’s good as it seems safer, but the downside is that its getting super expensive. You have to travel far for a cheap cinema ticket. There’s basically nothing for young people to do, you just want somewhere nice to go to that isn’t super expensive.
